The digital grand version of Yamaha’s Clavinova flagship, the CVP-709GP, wins on all fronts. It has the sound quality and elegant look of the real thing, plus its own set of technologically advanced digital features.

Sound

Like its sibling piano, the CVP-709GP packs a full 256-note polyphony giving unlimited possibilities to the pianist. Alongside the main events, two distinct grand piano voices sampled from the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial, it brings 1500 alternative voices and 37 drum beats.

Added to this the Virtual Resonance Modelling that Yamaha include, which imitates the way in which strings in the body of a grand piano sound even when it is another string that has been played, and the CVP-709GP achieves a depth that no sampled voice can alone.

In addition to the spruce wood cones and Twisted Flare Ports that form the main speakers on the piano, unique to the GP version is a subwoofer placed in the main body that ensures even the lowest notes can be played without distortion.

Technique

The Natural Wood X (NWX) keyboard has keys made out of moisture absorbent synthetic ivory, and are resistant to the warping that can affects keyboards. The NWX also weights the keys in precisely the same way as an acoustic grand piano; including escapement it ensures that the weighting is felt even when playing soft pianissimo. Counterweights included help return the keys to their resting position faster so that keys can be sounded more than once in rapid succession.
Equipped with the standard trio of pedals, the damper pedal on the CVP-709GP becomes more resistant the harder you press, reflecting the actual damping process as it occurs in an acoustic piano ensuring that the same pedalling technique can be used.

Yamaha’s Stereophonic Optimiser conditions the spacing of the sound when played through connected earphones, meaning that private playing can be as rewarding as playing through the speakers.

Electronics

The control panel is a 7” LED touch screen, through this you can navigate the features of the piano, and display scores and lyrics. The screen is also the access point for many of the CVP-709GP’s unique abilities. The session mode means that the pianist can play along with up to three different band members, dropping each individual member in or out of the mix as they please.

The digital grand piano will even suggest one of 600 styles of accompaniment from only few sounded notes or a rhythm. The screen can also display guide lamps that show learner where to place their fingers, leaving the note unsounded until the correct key is played. Additions for iOS users include the chord finder app through which any song can be played and its chords revealed.

Finally, the excellent recording possibilities on the CVP-709GP can be exploited to the full by using the USB port to connect the piano to external software platforms.

The Yamaha CVP-709GP is a beautiful digital grand piano. It sounds and looks like the real thing, whilst concealing a whole host of electronic and computing features that simply don’t occur on acoustic grand pianos. Yet it retains the simplicity of the best instruments and is welcoming to learners as well as experts. It is one of the best digital grand pianos that money can buy.
