Casio PX-160

Part of Casio’s Privia series of digital pianos the PX-160 is a superb digital piano with a truly wonderful voice, plenty of creative features, and a compact and lightweight design giving it a highly desirable balance.

Sampling for the main grand piano voices use Casio’s Multi-dimensional Morphing AiR Sound Source technique. After capturing the sound of the string resonating the note had been perfected Casio aimed for such realism that they reproduced even the natural decline of the note that occurs after its key has been pressed, taking into account the force used and time it is held, as opposed to having a strong clear sound for the whole time that the key is depressed.

Casio have introduced techniques that avoid the loss of sound quality inherent in the compression of data that is necessary for recording audio data, ensuring the transfer of sound from sampling to playback loses as little as possible in terms of realism.

There are total of 18 voices in the Casio PX-160 including 4 grand piano voices, electric pianos, organs, and strings. Each voice is new and conforms to Casio’s high quality standards. These come sounded through a similarly newly developed true-round speaker system that gets the optimum tone for both low and high notes.

With Casio’s Tri-sensor Graded Hammer Action Keyboard II recreation of the effects of a grand piano’s keyboard just got a lot more real. The minute sensitivity of this system releases the sound of the note with precision timing and allows a continuous sounding of the note when even a single key is played repeatedly. As it is graded, the keyboard of the PX-160 feels heavier in the lower register and lighter in the higher.

Such care has been taken in the engineering of the keyboard that the volume of the note, which in an acoustic piano is variable according to the size of the hammer needed to strike the string and so different even when the same force is used for two different keys, has been painstakingly copied for the keyboard of the Casio PX-160. As a touch sensitive keyboard the PX-160 also has 3 dynamic levels of touch sensation meaning that the speed the key is pressed determines the volume of the note.

The material out of which the keys are made has been chosen with the pianist in mind, they come as close to the traditional ebony and ivory as synthetic materials can get thereby limiting the possibility of slippage.

Despite its high quality craftsmanship the PX-160 does not neglect new pianists and those serious about becoming musicians should only be encouraged by the lesson feature, its 60 pre-loaded song library and the option to upload 10 songs of the player’s choice to learn along to.

The Casio PX-160 is not short of effects with 4 types of reverb, 4 types of chorus, brilliance, and DSP technology. There are the options to transpose the keyboard up to 2 octaves, layering and splitting different voices across the keyboard, and the capacity to host pedals when fitting the piano to a stand.

Connectivity capabilities include a USB To Host drive for linking the PX-160 to a computer and MIDI sequencers, and the ability export recordings made on the 1 song 2 track recording facility. The 2 headphones jacks and the Aux Out port can connect external speakers, PA systems, and other electronic equipment.
