Casio PX-560

A superbly diverse digital piano, the Casio PX-560 manages to pull off the feat of being in-tune with both classic acoustic music playing and modern electronic music production.

The most outstanding feature of the PX-560 is its 5.3” colour touchscreen, enhancing user interaction so that it impacts positively on their ability to create music. The many complex features are made more dynamic and additional uses, such as editing of recordings, are given the room to flourish.

Built with the Tri-sensor Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard II, the PX-560 is first of all a superb piano. This top-of-the-range keyboard gives the pianist a feel and experience that matches that of an acoustic piano. With touch sensitivity, graded weighting, and synthetic ivory and ebony feel, this keyboard mimics all the vital features of a real piano’s keyboard, ensuring that technique learned on the PX-560 can be accurately transferred to acoustic instruments.

With dual pedal inputs and a combination of Casio’s CS-67P stand and SP-33 3-pedal unit, soft, sustain, and sostenuto, the PX-560 can be fully armoured to cope with the demands of a pianist’s musical technique.

The PX-560 is powered by Casio’s Multi-dimensional AiR sound engine, which helps to recreate a piano’s sound with ultimate precision. Its features recreate the nuances that are the result of a piano’s make-up and have come to define its charm. Linear morphing eases the transition between soft and loud sounds. Damper resonance imitates the bass rumble of the string’s interaction with the wooden soundboard. String resonance polices the harmonic play between strings. Hammer response accurate reflects the delay between pressing a key and a string sounding. Key-off simulation allows the player to control the deterioration of each individual note according to the speed with which they lift their finger from the key.

As well as being a brilliant piano, the PX-560 is also a complete synthesiser in its own right. This is where the touchscreen display comes into its own, by simplifying and coordinating the sound design. With Hex layer technology the PX-560 commands functions that allows the control of 4 split zones and 14 layers, it is a tool of wild harmonic possibilities for the creatively minded. This as well as physical controls such a 3 real-time control knobs and a modulation wheel, both of which can handle two different parameters at the same time. There are numerous filters, envelopes, and modulation effects to give ever more sonic range.

There are 550 different voices built-in to the Casio PX-560, a huge amount for anyone to play with. These can give amazing potential to both formulations of the unit, as a piano or a synth. 200 accompaniment rhythms in many different musical genres provide a base for playing or experiment. Plus there are 30 free slots that allow the user to create their own rhythm tracks. 100 pre-set song spaces are also waiting to be filled by the user, so that chord progressions, bass-lines, and drum patterns can come together to make unique and memorable music.

The combination of all these features are packed into a machine that weighs under 12kg, making it easily carried; the ultimate stage piano.

And there is more. Recording facilities to capture the musical journeys the PX-560 can go on feature in 2 formats. A 17-track MIDI recorder, with on-board editing capabilities, and a direct to USB recorder for simple transfer to more complex editing software.

For the student there is duet mode, in which the keyboard is effectively divided into 2 smaller keyboards with equal pitch ranges. This allows a tutor to demonstrate and a pupil to replicate exactly. Classroom mode lets the 2 duet sides send their audio information to 2 different audio outputs, so that it can interact with 3rd party piano lab systems. And the 2 headphone jacks make private playing easy.

Finally, the USB port facilitates connections to Macs, PC, and iOS devices without needing to download extra drivers, another simplification that lets the user get on with making music.
