Casio GP-500

Encased in a body of polished ebony finish the GP-500 was created in collaboration with C. Bechstein, and plays and sounds like a real grand piano. It has full-sized keyboard, many of the features of an acoustic piano, and plenty of extra features of a digital piano.

The Natural Grand Hammer keyboard is convincingly similar to the keyboard of an acoustic piano. The keys move actual hammers and have three movement sensors to give an incredibly nuanced reaction to the playing of a note. The keys are weighted, graded, and have 5-levels of dynamic touch sensitivity, giving the pianist considerable subtlety in note volume.

Duet mode enables the keyboard to be divided into two, smaller keyboards both of equal pitch range and sounded out of different speakers or headphones. The keyboard can be transposed by up to two octaves.

The GP-500 has all three pedals and half-pedalling for the damper pedal, with continuous recognition and 5 levels.

The Acoustic and Intelligence Resonator (AiR) Grand Sound Source gives Casio’s most complex and realistic sonic experience yet. It mimics the interaction of the various systems in an acoustic piano’s body and produces its own sound complete with those resonances.

The polyphony is 265-notes, making it competitive with the ability of an acoustic piano. There are 35 voices in the GP-500, concentrated on grand pianos from the instrument making traditions of Berlin, Hamburg, and Vienna, but also including electric pianos and strings amongst others.

The Concert play feature allows the pianist to accompany a full orchestra on 15 great classical pieces, including compositions by Tchaikovsky, Pachelbel, and Smetana. The pre-set song library has 60 MIDI songs and 10 free spaces ready to be filled by the user.

There is a 4-way speaker system with a combined power of 100W, enough to play a small venue without using any external amplification. A Lid simulator covers the speakers and apes the effect of a grand piano’s lid by altering the timbre of the sound according the position of the lid.

All the digital features on the Casio GP-500 are easy to use and easily referenced on the LCD screen. The many digital effects include 12 settings of concert hall, 4 chorus, 7 brilliance, as well as listening position, reverb, and DSP. Layer and Split modes allow the user to choose two different voices and sound them at the same time. A lesson function opens up the GP-500 to beginners and teaches both right and left hand techniques.

There are two recording facilities on the GP-500; a MIDI recorder with 1 song and 2 tracks; and an Audio recorder with 99 songs each up to 25 minutes long.

Music Scene mode has 15 pre-set combinations of voices, effects, and reverb ready to be played with, and there are 10 spaces that the user can fill with their own configurations.

Connectivity includes MIDI In/Out and Aux In/Out ports, and 2 headphone jacks, which can be used for connection to external speakers, PA systems, and sequencers amongst other things.
