Casio AP-260

The entry model of Casio’s Celviano digital piano series, the AP-260 is nevertheless made with quality features that make it a wonderful instrument for pianists of any ability.

Technique

The AP-260 is built with Casio’s Tri-sensor Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard II. This is a keyboard with a number of features that can deceive even the most practiced pianist into thinking that are playing on a real acoustic keyboard. It is weighted and graded so that the keys have a progressively lighter feel the higher the note is on the keyboard. It has 3 levels of touch sensitivity, which means a note’s volume changes according to the strength it is played with.

The keys themselves are synthetic ebony and ivory, limiting the chance of slip-off and enabling precision playing. With 128-notes of polyphony even the most complex songs, employing pedalling techniques, can be played without fear of notes dropping out prematurely. All 3 standard pedals familiar to an acoustic piano are present here also.

Sound

There are 18 different voices, giving the AP-260 a sonic variety absent from acoustic pianos. There are 4 grand piano voices, 1 upright, 3 electric pianos, 4 organs, strings, and bass among others. These can be put through further harmonic tests using the Layer and Split modes.

With Casio’s Multi-dimensional AiR sound source the AP-260 copies details that come incidentally with the construction of an acoustic piano and have become essential to how the instrument is played and heard. Such things as the resonance and the delay between pressing the key and the sounding of the string, all vital aspects that both adds richness to the music and affects the nuances of a pianist’s technique.

With 4 types of reverb, 4 of chorus, brilliance, and DSP, the player of the Casio AP-260 has plenty of scope to add interest and create sound worlds unique to digital instruments.

Digital

For the novice there are several features that make the AP-260 a welcoming first piano. A lesson function, teaching both right and left-hand techniques, has a music library with 60 songs and 10 concert songs to keep learning fresh. A duet mode halves the keyboard and creates two separate keyboards with equal pitch ranges so a tutor can demonstrate more easily to the pupil. The in-built metronome focusses rhythmic development. Two headphone jacks mean that practice can always be private and un-intrusive.

A double-track single-song recorder stores the music played on to the AP-260. The USB drive enables this to be exported. Whilst the MIDI connection gives the AP-260 an essential link to sequencers for musicians who want to play with other musicians.
