Broadway B1

An excellent digital piano that suits absolute beginners as well as more advanced pianists. With a sweet sound, a nuanced and sophisticated keyboard, and ample electronic features the Broadway B1 is fun at the same time as being a serious musical instrument.

Technique

The Broadway B1 hosts a full-sized keyboard of 88-notes, which is fully-weighted. This is the optimum level that a digital piano’s keyboard should be weighted to and helps with a pianist’s technique as the weight of the keys is similar to that of an acoustic piano.

To compliment this the B1 is also made with a Graded Hammer Action keyboard, which means that the keys ascend in heaviness from the treble notes to the bass notes, so the notes have a progressively more heavy touch such as occurs naturally on an acoustic piano due to the size of the hammers that strike the strings.

Finally the keyboard is touch sensitive, this mimics the effect that the force and speed with which the keys are struck has on the volume of the note played. The Broadway B1 has four dynamic levels, which is a satisfactory minimum but is not universal on all digital pianos. Again, this is vital for a pianist’s technique if they have ambitions to play on an upright or grand piano.

The 64-note polyphony ensures that the simultaneous sounding of multiple notes, including those long-held by the sustain pedal, is possible without disfiguring complex pieces by dropping out notes too early. To maximise the technical promise of the B1’s keyboard, this piano also comes fully fitted with the three standard pedals that adorn all quality acoustic pianos: soft, sostenuto, and damper. The transposition feature allows for the B1’s pitch to be altered to correspond with instruments that are tuned in a different key to the piano, highly desirable for those playing in a band.

Sound

The Broadway B1 is endowed with 10 instrument voices sampled in stereo from high quality sources by the manufacturer. These excellent primary voices bring piano sounds to the fore and are reinforced by a vast section of 262 General MIDI voices, which take in all well-known instruments and more.

This selection of voices comes into its own when combined with Split mode, a process of halving the keyboard and assigning a different voice to each half. And Layer mode, which lets the B1 sound two voices at the same time. A separate volume control for secondary voices maximises the potential of these modes. Other effects include several reverb types, chorus, and twin piano, each giving its own specific texture to the music.

Digital

The Broadway B1 is helped by its superb user-friendly control panel, located to the left of the keyboard all the effects and features are able to be activated at the quick touch of a button.

One of these features is its ability to record what is being played on it and store the performance for future playback. This is an excellent tool for both composers and learners, who can listen back their playing and identify areas of improvement.

The comprehensive connectivity capabilities of the B1 include MIDI In/Out ports and USB In, which enable the digital piano to be connected to a computer and for recordings to be easily exported and manipulated with software packages.

In terms of amplification the Broadway B1 is fitted with a four-way speaker system that gives perfect sound coverage when played in a modest setting. For greater levels of noise the B1 can easily be hooked up to external speakers and PA systems using its headphone jacks and MIDI connections.

"A good choice for us both" Review by Keith Hibbert, Newcastle, Northumberland

I chose this having seen my son's newly acquired Broadway B1, chosen by him for his children, our grandchildren. I'm at the other end of the age range, and newly learning to play. It seemed to me to be a good choice for us both. It was delivered on time, easily assembled and now happily used.
